The Legendary Pandit Jasraj

Padma Vibhushan Sangeet Martand

Indian Classical Music today, is one of the greatest gifts of India to the world.

And a blessed few, much beyond their fame and fortune, have devoted their lives to bolster this claim far and wide. While renowned instrumentalists have done it through their chosen instruments, like the Sitar and the Sarod, Pandit Jasraj has done it through that one God-gifted instrument: His Voice.

Pandit Jasraj’s achievements are beyond compare more so because vocal music is the most intimate and direct medium according to India’s musical treatise and tradition. And almost beyond belief is also the fact that he has carved out his monumental global following without depriving his many million domestic admirers. He has been passionately loyal to his soil, while his music has scaled ethereal heights all over the planet. He has single-handedly paved the way for Indian vocal classical music to resonate across the world.

Unique Musical Attributes Blessed with a soulful and sonorous voice, which traverses masterfully over all four and a half octaves, Jasraj’s vocalizing is characterized by a harmonious blend of the classic and opulent elements projecting traditional music as an intense spiritual expression, at once chaste and yet densely coloured. This gives his music a unique and sublime emotional quality, reaching out to the very soul of the listener. Perfect diction, clarity in sur (musical notes), and gayaki (creative musical progression), command in all aspects of laya and rhythm, depth of composition and an unmistakable interplay between notes and words to evoke the desired mood and emotion, are the hallmark of Panditji’s music. This sensitivity, added to the pure classical approach, has given his singing a lyrical quality, the quintessential of the Mewati tradition of singing.

Shashank Subramaniyam

He was the youngest musician to have been invited by The Music Academy, Chennai to perform the senior most slot of The Music Academy, (often performed by Legends of Indian Classical Music), at the age of 12 – a record yet to be broken in the history of South Indian Music.

He is presently considered one of the best Bamboo Flute artists and is hailed so by the Indian and international media alike. The BBC World TV telecast a documentary on Shashank titled “Destination Music”, recently. Shashank has collaborated with hosts of legendary musicians and bands from India and around the world including Guitarist John McLaughlin, Paco De Lucia, Tabla Maestro Zakir Hussain, Ustad Sultan Khan, Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Pt. Ajoy Chakraborthy, The New Jungle Orchestra, to name a few.

With scintillating, primal tones he truly sings through the most organic and ancient of all instruments. His logic-defying virtuosity is the result of a magical innate talent coupled with the best possible training. Shashank has propelled the Bamboo flute into an enviable position by his playing techniques of which “the multi flute transposed fingering technique” and the "dual octave production” have won him world acclaim.

SwarGanga – A River of Notes

Our Roots

Ganga – the name itself evokes a deep emotion about India. Its vastness, purity and divinity can probably be best compared with eternal music that flows from the seven swaras. What better name than SwarGanga to describe an organization that works to promote Indian classical music.

India has a rich musical tradition. Once considered as one of the most respected professions, over the past few decades Indian classical music has experienced many ups and downs. A lot of music has been lost due to lack of proper documentation. We have made it our mission not only to preserve Indian classical music but to preserve a piece of Indian culture! We at SwarGanga use all the available technology resources, including web, mobile and social networking, to reach out to millions of visitors each year. We have been able to create the world’s largest database on North Indian classical music by documenting various raags, taals, bandishes, artists, gharanas or instruments, etc. in our databases.

Our Mission

SwarGanga’s mission is three-fold:

  • To promote North Indian classical music throughout the world
  • To promote young, upcoming and less known artists
  • To document and preserve North Indian classical music assets digitally

Our Activities

  • SwarGanga Music Festival and Music Concerts
  • Crescendo
  • SwarGanga School of Music

About The Heartfulness Way

Building on ageless oral tradition, Kamlesh D. Patel – widely known as Daaji, the fourth guru in the Heartfulness tradition – traces a seeker’s journey as he examines the nature of spiritual search. Through a series of illuminating conversations between a teacher and a student, Daaji reveals the principles of the Heartfulness practice and philosophy to Joshua Pollock, a Heartfulness practitioner and trainer.

If you knew there was a practical way to transcend suffering and fly into the sky of hope and contentment, would you be interested?

That is exactly what Heartfulness offers – transforming us from the inside out so that we see the world in a new way, without the filters of our limitations.
